Lisl Steiner - Biography

RESIDES: New York

CITIZEN: United States

BIOGRAPHY:
1927: Born in Vienna, Austria

1938: emigration with family to Buenos Aires, Argentina.

1942-50: private instruction with Ignazio Kaufman in drawings.

1945-53: active in the Argentine film industry. Ms. Steiner was involved in the production of over 50 film documentaries

1940s: During this time, involved with emerging Arte Madí movement with Gyula Kosice and others

1953 to present day:

  • Traveled the world many times throughout her career, as a photojournalist
  • Beginning in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and then in Europe and North America, Ms. Steiner photographed her way around the world.
  • Ms. Steiner contributed to such US publications as Life, Time, Newsweek and the New York Times, as a freelance photojournalist.
  • She also worked on numerous television productions for NBC and Public Television (PBS)
  • Ms. Steiner represents Argentina in the United States as an Academician in Arts and Sciences
  • Keystone Press Agency, O'Cruzeiro, Brazil - staff photographer
  • Die Woche, Switzerland - various projects
1962 to present: Involved with Caramoor Music Festival

1999: Vienna, Austria: Galerie Johannes Faber exhibits her photographs

1999: Austrian National Library houses Ms. Steiner's sketches

2000: Leica Gallery, hosted a full retrospective of her work

2004: Ms. Steiner's photographic archive gifted to the Austrian National Library

Ongoing: Ms. Steiner's project: Children of America, comprising images from all countries in South, Central and North America
